Salgado Makes Sure NHLers to Have Their Bases Covered
By Patrick Hoffman
When we think of professional hockey players, we tend to only think about what they do on the field.
While that is obviously understandable, there is a lot more that pro hockey players have to worry about besides what they are trying to accomplish on the ice. This is where a guy like Richard "Big Daddy" Salgado comes in.
Salgado was kind enough to take time out of his busy schedule to talk about his hockey fandom, how he started his business, what NHLers he works for, what he does for NHLers, as well as a bit about the bright future of his company.
I hope you enjoy this and that you come away learning something about what players have to focus on when it comes to their careers off the ice.
PH: Growing up, what hockey teams (if any) did you follow?
RS: Growing up on Long Island, it was a given that it was the Islanders. The first ever hockey game I went to was an Islanders game.
I liked guys like Mike Bossy, Clark Gillies, and John Tonelli.
I was also a fan of the Montreal Canadiens and ended up liking guys like Guy LaFleur, Ken Dryden and Guy Carbonneau.
PH: At what point in your life did you know that you wanted to work in the sports industry?
RS: Since I was in high school. I started my passion as a water boy for my high school football and basketball teams.
PH: Tell us what drove you to start your own business, Coastal Advisors LLC?
RS: What drove me to want to work with athletes was the need to protect and educate them. I had to stress to them that my company and services were as important as their agent or financial advisor.
PH: What does your company do? RS: We are a full-service insurance consulting and risk management firm.
We mainly do life insurance, disability, and career-ending insurance. We also do protection planning for their families as well as any business ventures they have off the ice or field.
PH: In looking at your Twitter and Facebook pages, it is clear that you do some work for people in hockey. Which hockey guys do you work for and how do you help them out?RS: I do work for players such as Sergei Bobrovsky, Artemi Panarin, Semyon Varlamov, Dennis Seidenberg, and two former Calder Trophy winners as the NHL's rookie of the year in Bryan Berard and Scott Gomez.
For these guys, I have set-up both career-ending policies and life insurance policies.
PH: Why do you think it is important for your clients to use your company specifically?
RS: It's important for these guys to work with us as we have over 20 years of experience and our client list speaks for itself.
PH: Is there anything else you'd like to share with us?
RS: I have added a new partner, Chris Muro, and we have offices in New York City and Boca Raton.
We also work with several notable NHL clients in Kevin Weekes, Billy Jaffe, Bill Guerin, and Joe Micheletti.
Lastly, we have started to work with the unions of all the pro sports to assist players who have retired and try to bring them better packages. Stay tuned for that as it will be a story in itself.
