PHWA Continues to Miss on Fischler
By Patrick Hoffman
I am getting sick and tired of writing this year after year, but for whatever reason, the Professional Hockey Writers Association (PHWA) does not seem to listen to me or many others in the hockey world.
The PHWA announced last week that they had selected Frank Brown as the Elmer Ferguson Memorial Award, which recognizes excellence in hockey journalism. While I do think that Brown deserved to get this honor, I think another guy deserves it even more and is someone that should have won it a very long time ago.
If you've read my work or have been following me on social media, you should know by now that I believe that the PHWA needs to give the award to Stan Fischler. The fact that Fischler isn't in already in the Hockey Hall of Fame is a joke.
Now, I should preface this by saying that I am clearly biased about this particular top. I interned for the "Hockey Maven" in the summers of 2001, 2002, and 2003.
He's always been great to me, has responded to all of my emails, has allowed me to contribute to his newsletter, The Fischler Report, and much more. Not only is he a great hockey guy, but he's also a wonderful human being.
He has covered our favorite sport for OVER 60 years! He has seen it all when it comes to hockey. To this day via his Twitter feed and his various columns, he continues to tell us wonderful old-time hockey stories, something we should cherish.
Stan has also written well OVER 100 books on the game of hockey. His books range from teams, to personalities, to trivia, and basically anything and everything else that has to do with the game.
am not sure why the PHWA continues to ignore him. He's a hockey-writing legend and has been for a very long time, and yet, he has still yet to receive the Elmer Ferguson.
The PHWA needs to get it right sooner rather than later. Yes, they did it right by giving it to Brown this year, but Stan needs to be next.
Heck, this is an issue that the PHWA created themselves. Stan should already have this honor and the fact that he does not is ridiculous.
I truly hope the PHWA comes through because the longer they continue to not give Stan this honor, the more it looks like they have no idea what Stan has meant and done for this sport.
