The Islanders Need to Hire Lou Lamoriello
By Patrick Hoffman
I hate to bash other teams, but the fact of the matter is that when it comes to management, the New York Islanders are an absolute joke.
Since being given the general manager's position prior to the 2005-06 season, Garth Snow has done an awful job. Yes, he drafted John Tavares, but other than that, he really has not accomplished much.
Under Snow's watch, the Islanders have made the playoffs three times. Yes, you read that right.
This is why the Islanders need to do something smart for once. To do something smart, they need to figure out a way to hire Lou Lamoriello to be their next general manager.
On April 30, the Toronto Maple Leafs decided not to bring back Lamoriello, whose contract expired at the end of the season. With the Leafs, Lamoriello helped get the Leafs back to being a formidable and playoff hockey club, not an easy feat considering that the GM's before him failed to do so since the 2003-04 season.
There are several reasons that the Isles need to bring this man on board. For starters, his resume speaks for itself.
Lou is a winner. He built three Stanley Cup winners with the New Jersey Devils, won several division titles, went to the Cup Final four times, and showed the rest of the league how teams should be constructed.
Snow is clearly someone who does not know how to build a winner. When you're a franchise that has been to the playoffs just three times in over a decade, something needs to be changed and someone else needs to be given the keys to do things right.
Secondly, Lou has actual GM experience. Sure, Snow has been a GM since 2006-07, but prior to that, he was an NHL goaltender who had no management/executive experience in the league.
Lou has done it all in hockey. He's been a GM and coach, has made a lot of deals, has won Cups, has built contenders, and clearly knows the ins and outs of the game and the league.
The Islanders have not had someone like that since Bill Torrey. Torrey was the guy that helped build this franchise's dynasty back in the 80's and he did it the right way.
The Islanders need to hire Lou because they need to show the rest of the league that they have a competent GM. By continuing to have Snow run the show, the organization is showing the complete opposite.
What's quite embarrassing for this franchise is that their fans have publicly shown that they want to get rid of Snow. You don't see many fan bases go to this length to voice their displeasure, but Islanders fans clearly felt the need to do so.
Lastly, hiring Lou would give the fan base some much needed hope. This team's fans deserve a GM that knows how to win and one that will make the right moves to make that happen.
We are obviously not sure if the Islanders will go this route. With that said, however, they need someone who knows what they are doing and Snow is not that man.
Lou is the right man for the job. It is now up to the Islanders to try and make this happen.
